‘Suicide Squad’ makes $267.1 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Despite negative reviews, Warner Bros.’ ‘Suicide Squad’ made $267.1 million at the global box office on its opening weekend.

However, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, revenue fell badly from Friday to Saturday by 41 per cent in the US. The report noted that box office analysts point to poor word-of-mouth following blistering notices and a B+ CinemaScore. That grade might sound okay, but most successful superhero movies generally receive some variation of an A.

“While the opening is massive, a title like this should really only fall in the 30 percent range at the outside. It isn’t a good sign for playability,” said a veteran distribution executive to the publication.

Meanwhile, ‘Jason Bourne’ more than halved its take making $43.6 million globally in its second weekend compared to $110.1 million in the opening weekend. Universal’s ‘The Secret Life Of Pets’ has crossed $500 million worldwide.
comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Warner Bros.’ latest DC Comics release ‘Suicide Squad’ took aim at the global box office and posted the biggest August opening ever at both the international box office and in North America for a combined weekend of $267.1 million in 58 territories around the world. As an added bonus, the film propelled Imax to its biggest international August debut with $7.2 million. Notably, the fantasy action movie ‘Time Raiders’ enjoyed a phenomenal weekend of $64.6 million in China for an impressive third place finish on the chart.”
