Shemaroo gets Novex to exploit PPL rights
MUMBAI: Novex Communications is expanding its music licensing rights portfolio. Having already got rights from Yash Raj Films and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), the company has been authorised by integrated media content firm Shemaroo as its official agent to exploit public performance licensing (PPL) rights in the sound recordings of songs.
This is the first time that Shemaroo has given its PPL rights to any company, thus opening up a revenue stream that it expects to grow in the future.
Shemaroo has signed a deal with Novex, whereby it has transferred and assigned copyright for the sound recording of the songs contained in the film in which copyright subsist.
“It is a long-term deal. We expect to see good growth from this business,” said Novex Communications promoter Ketan Kanakia.
Any commercial establishment such as hotels and event organisers will have to obtain licence from Novex and pay a fee to play audio music for their patrons, the rights of which are with Shemaroo.
The agreement will include other commercial establishments such as airports, amusement parks, art galleries, banks, beauty parlours, bowling alleys, buses, cinemas, clubs, dance centres, discotheques, DJs, exercise classes, exhibitions, factories, hospitals, magic shows, museums, nursing homes, offices, railways stations, railway trains, reception areas, shops, spectator sports, swimming pools and theatres. Any musical composition, sound recording or any part thereof, in any format, for the purpose of profit or entertainment in a place will need a ‘Novex Music Licence’ from the copyright owner or authorised agent of copyright owner.
The deal also gives the copyright owner an authority to initiate legal action against any establishment, found to be playing their music anywhere in India, without authorisation.
“We are the legal content owners for all content available to us. It is mandatory to obtain a licence for all using our content in any public place in the form of any musical composition, sound recordings or CD whatsoever,” said Kanakia.
Novex Communications’ clients include Taj Hotel Resorts and Palaces, ITC Hotels, The Leela, Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, The Lalit, The Park, Shangri-la Hotels & Resorts, Samhi, Lemon Tree Premiere, Mariott Hotels, Resorts & Suits, Club Mahindra, Destiny Group, DNA, Wizcraft, Cineyug, Encompass, Croma, Aditya Birla, Globus, Walmart, Reliance Retail, Pizza Hut Delivery and Jumbo.
Apart from Shemaroo, Novex also has rights of Zee Music Company and Yash Raj Films (YRF). The content agent has access to film songs from ‘Sairat’, ‘Dangal’, ‘Rock On’, ‘Baar Baar Dekho’, ‘Befikre’, ‘Fan’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Band Bajaa Baraat’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, ‘Dhoom 3’, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, ‘Raees’ and more.
The company also has access to future releases such as YRF’s ‘Bank Chor’, ‘Hindostan’ and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’; and Zee Music’s ‘Half Girlfriend’, ‘Secret Superstar’, ‘Sairaat’ (Remake in Hindi), ‘Student of the Year 2’ and ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’.
“Despite competitors having bigger libraries, we are proud of the fact that songs from our libraries dominate 60% of the market as per the recent study done by Radio Mirchi and other national surveys,” said Kanakia.
