Saregama ropes in Rajesh Beri & Siddharath Anand to strengthen TV biz
MUMBAI: Saregama India Ltd, the entertainment arm of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, is strengthening its television business. It has ramped up its TV content management team by hiring two senior creative people, Rajesh Beri and Siddharth Anand.
Beri will be in the creative role while Anand will take directorial responsibilities. Both will report to Saregama TV division business head Manish Popat.
Saregama MD Vikram Mehra said, “Saregama is very serious about creating good quality content for television and with Rajesh and Siddharth, two industry veterans, on board we hope to achieve greater highs in the coming time.”
Beri features in the Limca Books of Records for writing the maximum number of episodes of any serial. He is the only writer in the country to write 1328 episodes, story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for a serial, ‘Bhabhi’, that aired on Star Plus.
He has over 45 serials to his credit, telecast across all the major national channels like Star Plus, Sony, DD, Zee TV to name a few.
Meanwhile, Anand comes on board with a degree in film making from Hampshire College in Massachusetts. He has been the director for projects like ‘Hello Pratibha’ on Zee TV, ‘Shastri Sisters’ on Colors and an upcoming show on Sony TV titled ‘Zinda’.
Besides owning the largest music archive in India, Saregama is also a producer of content for TV channels in Hindi, Tamil and Bangla. Today, this business contributes over 35 per cent to the company’s revenue. The company has currently got seven shows on air and another three are slated to be launched in the next three months.
In June 2001, Saregama marked its foray into the TV space in the south. It has since then produced approximately 4000 hours of TV content on Sun Network, covering genres like socio-mythology, family soaps, fantasy fiction, horror and more in all the four South Indian languages.
Many of its popular soaps and serials have crossed three years of telecast. The company had launched a show ‘Athi Pookkal’ in the afternoon band of Sun TV which has crossed over 1000 episodes.
Saregama has also produced several non-fiction shows with celebrity judges like AR Rahman, Vasundhara Das, Shivmani, Lawrence, Mumtaz, Malavika. It currently has 8 hours of programming per week on Sun TV, out of which two are daily soaps (Chandralekha and Valli), one is a horror fiction (Bhairavi) and the other a family game show ‘Chellame Chellam’.
The company had also seen success in the Bangla TV space with shows like ‘Kon Kanoner Phool’ on Zee Bangla, ‘Raja Rajeshwari’ on Mahua and ‘Apur Katha’ on Colors Bangla.
Currently, Saregama has two shows running on Doordarshan at prime time – ‘Stree Shakti’ and ‘Jab Jab Bahar Aayi’. Along with TV shows, Saregama is also producing vignettes based on the speeches of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru for Epic Channel. It is also producing the ‘Savdhaan India Maharashtra Fights Back’ series for Life OK.
