MipTV unveils 12 selections for Mipdrama

MUMBAI: Television trade event MipTV has unveiled a line-up of 12 high-end, international drama series that will be screened for the first time to buyers and press from around the world at the inaugural MipDrama Screenings on 3 April.

The drama showcase will be held in Cannes’ JW Marriott Hotel on the eve of MipTV and will give buyers an exclusive first-look at new titles on the international market. Around 350 international acquisition executives and press are expected to attend the screenings.

MipTV takes place in Cannes, France, from 4-7 April.

Submissions for the inaugural MipDrama Screenings were received from 28 countries across Europe, the USA, Canada, Latin America and Asia – reflecting the growing internationalisation of cutting-edge drama production.

The 12 finalists were selected by an all-star jury comprised of showrunners and programme creators Teresa Fernández-Valdes & Ramón Campos Sáez (Showrunners for ‘The Refugees,’ ‘Velvet’ and ‘Gran Hotel’ Spain), Chris Long (Director and Executive Producer ‘The Americans’ and ‘The Mentalist’ USA), Sarah Phelps (Writer and Executive Producer ‘And Then There Were None,’ ‘Casual Vacancy’ and ‘Great Expectations’ UK), Søren Sveistrup (Creator and Writer ‘Forbrydelsen/The Killing’ Denmark) and Anna Winger (Writer and Co-Creator ‘Deutschland 83’ Germany).

Commenting on the state of international drama and the inaugural MipDrama Screenings, Sveistrup noted, “There are so many talented people in the TV business right now, directing, writing, producing and acting, and that’s the main reason why TV drama’s hot at the moment. Luckily, people are different, so all these shows are very different and the MipDrama Screenings is really a great proof of the variety.”

The MipDrama Screenings finalists will present 15’-20’ excerpts supported by creative talent attached to each series. The day-long event will culminate with a “Coup de Coeur” award to one series chosen by the Mip Markets Drama Buyers Advisory Board made up of Albavision, LATAM Head of Acquisitions Ignacio Barrera, Prosiebensat executive VP programming, acquisitions Rüdiger Böss, Canal+ senior VP international acquisitions Aline Marrache-Tesseraud, TV2 head of acquisitions, formats Anette Romer, Mediaset head of acquisitions Zelda Stewart and Sky director of acquisitions Sarah Wright.

“The inaugural MipPDrama Screenings showcase great drama series sourced from around the world. They reflect the popularity and quality of drama and its international appeal. MipTV is an ideal launching pad for such series. We are planning to continue to develop the MipDrama Screenings and our drama offering in 2017” commented Reed Midem’s television division director Laurine Garaude.
