Lionsgate, StudioCanal expand agreement in Germany

MUMBAI: US media and entertainment company Lionsgate has expanded its partnership with European media company Studiocanal for the distribution of Lionsgate feature films in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The new output deal with Studiocanal will launch an upcoming film slate that encompasses the next two installments of the Hunger Games franchise, ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Parts 1 and 2’, starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson; the action comedy ‘Mortdecai’ starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor; and the live action ‘Power Rangers’ franchise. ‘Mockingjay 1’ will usher in the new deal with its 20 November 2014 release in Germany.

Lionsgate’s feature film slate will also be the centerpiece of Studiocanal Germany’s new multiyear agreement with the ProSiebenSat.1 Group under which ProSieben has licensed exclusive TV rights to Lionsgate feature films for its free TV channels in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland.

Studiocanal Germany CEO Rodolphe Buet said, “We’re delighted to expand our partnership with Patrick, Rob, Andrew and the rest of the Lionsgate team that has brought us the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise and a steady pipeline of some of the most commercially exciting films in the world.

“We couldn’t wish for better partners, and we expect Lionsgate’s slate to have tremendous resonance for our audiences in the years to come.”

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman said, “Studiocanal was a major contributor to ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise’s evolution into a global phenomenon, and we’re delighted to expand our productive long-term partnership with our friends at Studiocanal and ProSieben.

“Thanks to their efforts, ‘Catching Fire’ more than doubled the box office performance of the first ‘Hunger Games’ film in Germany, and we’re proud to partner with them in continuing to grow the franchise and bringing our strongest theatrical slate ever to German audiences.”
