Govt directs ISPs to block 857 porn websites

MUMBAI: The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has asked internet service providers (ISPs) to block 857 porn websites.

The ISPs have started blocking porn websites in compliance with the DoT order.

The ISPs received letters on Saturday from Department of Telecommunications (DoT) asking them to block porn websites.

IT secretary RS Sharma told HT that the ministry “followed court directives” in blocking porn websites.

According to a report in The Economic Times, the internet companies were asked to prepare the list of porn websites after a meeting in last September, chaired by telecom and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and attended by top officials.

It discussed the “problem of porn” and the minister directed the departments of IT and telecom to work together to improve “blocking infrastructure” at the ISP level, the report added.

The meeting of the Cyber Regulation Advisory Committee was triggered by a directive from the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition by a lawyer seeking to ban porn as it leads to “activities like rape, harassment, molestations of women”.

The matter came up before a bench headed by the Chief Justice on 8 July. The bench, however, declined to pass an interim order. Chief Justice of India (CJI) HL Dattu had observed during the hearing that it would be a violation of Article 21’s right to personal liberty to ban anyone over 18 years of age from “watching it within the four walls of my room”.
