Former ZEEL executive Akash Chawla turns entrepreneur with Fresh Lime Films LLP

MUMBAI: Former Zee Studio EVP and business head Akash Chawla has launched his own venture, Fresh Lime Films.

Fresh Lime Films is a creative studio that has digital content creation and feature films as its two verticals. With this venture, Chawla aims to take Indian stories to audiences across the globe.

Chawla was part of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) until February 2017. He was with the company for about 12 years and was responsible for overall profitability of the content business. His line of duties included setting up film projects across languages, monetisation of films across all rights, negotiations and sales on all purchases and sales of film content, and setting up teams across all functions of the organisation.

Chawla joined as brand head for Zee TV in 2005. By March 2009, he was heading marketing for Zee Cinema. Subsequently, he was made marketing head for ZEEL’s national channels. After the exit of Pradeep Hejmadi, he was given additional charge of Zee TV as business head in 2016.

As the head of Zee Studio’s content business, Chawla produced the blockbuster Hindi film ‘Rustom’ and was responsible for monetising and marketing films across the world across all platforms. He was instrumental in shaping Zee Studio’s emergence as one of the leading players in the content business in India. He was involved in satellite acquisitions of Hindi films and setting up overseas film distribution networks across US, Canada, Europe and APAC.

Recently, he also sold the SVOD rights of ‘Sairat’, the first Marathi film in India to be sold to Netflix. In the last three years, he has produced a number of scripted and unscripted series for Zee under the banner of ‘Essel Vision Productions’ in different languages (Hindi, Marathi, Tamil).

He also produced film events like Zee Cine Awards across different parts of the world. He also produced the first web series for Zee’s OTT platform.

Chawla has spent more than a decade and a half in the entertainment industry and helped build global television channel brands and National Award-winning feature films.

He has an MBA from Sydenham College and a bachelor’s degree from Narsee Monjee.
