‘Fast And Furious 8’ crosses $500 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: ‘Fast And Furious 8’ has crossed the $500 million mark in its opening weekend globally. The film is said to be Universal’s most ambitious global release.

comScore has announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of 16 April as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services. 

Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Universal’s ‘The Fate of the Furious,’ the eighth film in the popular franchise, revved up and hit the gas with a monumental biggest-ever global opening weekend of $532.5 million, including a massive debut in China, where the film posted the biggest 3-day opening weekend of all-time.”

Two more ‘Fast And Furious’ movies are in the pipeline for the franchise which started back in 2001 and is a serious cash cow for Universal.

The top 12 worldwide weekend box office estimates, listed in descending order per data collected as of 16 April, are:

1. Fate Of The Furious, The – Universal – $532.5 Million
2. The Boss Baby – 20th Century Fox – $52.3 Million
3. Beauty And The Beast – Disney – $35.6 Million
4. Smurfs: The Lost Village – Sony – $22.9 Million
5. Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella, A – Multiple Chinese Distributors – $12 Million
6. Ghost In The Shell – Paramount Pictures – $10.7 Million
7. Going In Style – Warner Bros. – $10.7 Million
8. Kong: Skull Island – Warner Bros. – $6.5 Million
9. Power Rangers – Lionsgate – $5.5 Million
10. The Shack – Lionsgate – $4.8 Million
11. Get Out – Universal – $3.9 Million
