Box office: SRK’s ‘Dilwale’ trumps ‘Bajirao Mastani’ in 1st weekend
MUMBAI: After a long time, two big movies hit the theatres on the same day, jostling for more screens and film lovers’ attention.
While none of the two mega releases (‘Dilwale’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’) on 18 December could reach the magic Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) mark in the first weekend, they collectively pocketed Rs 111.4 crore (Rs 1.11 billion) in the first three days.
Rohit Shetty’s ‘Dilwale’ has a much-anticipated Shah Rukh–Kajol love story, while Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’ had the real-life couple Ranveer–Deepika in lead roles.
As far as box-office collection goes, ‘Dilwale’ has been a bigger success. The film has netted Rs 64.63 crore (Rs 646.3 million) in the first weekend. ‘Bajirao Mastani’, meanwhile, has collected Rs 46.77 crore (Rs 467.7 million).
The superhit pairing of Shah Rukh and Kajol, last seen five years back in ‘My Name is Khan’, is one of the most adored on-screen couples. The film is a romantic action comedy, a typical Rohit Shetty affair.
‘Dilwale’ opened with a Friday collection of Rs 20.52 crore (Rs 205.2 million), but Saturday (Rs 20.09 crore or Rs 200.9 million) and Sunday (Rs 24.02 crore or Rs 240.2 million) did not see much growth over the Friday collections.
Nevertheless, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ has been showing an upward graph. Collections jumped 21 per cent on Saturday over Friday and 44 per cent on Sunday over Friday in multiplexes.
Its Friday, Saturday and Sunday net collections stood at Rs 12.80 crore (Rs 128 million), Rs 15.52 crore (Rs 155.2 million) and Rs 18.45 crore (Rs 184.5 million) respectively.
The gross collection worldwide stood at Rs 90.80 crore (Rs 908 million) in the opening weekend, Eros said. While in India ‘Bajirao Mastani’ mopped up Rs 60.80 crore (Rs 608 million), Rs 30 crore (Rs 300 million) was collected overseas.
Eros International and Bhansali Productions’ ‘Bajirao Mastani’ is the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao the first (Ranveer Singh) and his second wife Mastani (Deepika Padukone). Priyanka Chopra plays the role of Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai.
