Arnab Goswami’s mission to build Republicworld.com as a global news platform

MUMBAI: Arnab Goswami is planning to build Republicworld.com, the digital destination of his English news channel Republic TV, as a global news platform. Republicworld.com officially went live on Friday with 33 content partners on board.

Talking at the launch, Goswami said that his mission is to make Republicworld.com a global news platform by having news gathering teams in different parts of the world.

Republic TV, Goswami claimed, has received seven partnership offers from international platforms; however, the news channel wants to do content on its own rather rely on third-party content.

“There is no reason why this (Republicworld.com) cannot transform into a global media environment. I foresee that Republic World, I don’t know exactly when, is going to be India’s first foray into global media,” Goswami stated.

He also noted that two of his three objectives for Republic TV have been fulfilled. The first objective was to launch the channel and make it No. 1. The second was to launch the digital product. Both have been accomplished in record time. The third one is taking Republicworld.com global.

“We launched the channel in three months. We launched Republicworld.com in eight weeks of the TV channel’s launch. We are the fastest movers of Indian news environment. Our next target is to produce news for the world. We have been approached by seven people. However, we want to do this on our own. We want to provide competition to those guys,” he averred.

Republic TV CEO Vikas Khanchandani said that Republic TV will be launched globally through traditional platforms. However, that will largely cater to Indian diaspora. Republicworld.com will target the international audience.

Goswami also said that Republicworld.com has five selling points. These are media tie-ups with diverse brands, sub-verticals based on habits, personalisation of content, vertical videos and VR content.

For VR content, Republic has Microsoft as a technology front. In an innovation of sorts, the news organisation is also working on technology to strip the TV ads and insert ads on digital. This will ensure separate monetisation of live stream and online videos.

Republicworld.com will also build communities around user habits such as entertainment, music, gadgets, sports, automobile and travel. Besides English, it has content in 10 regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Odia, Gujarati and Marathi.

Its media partners include News Live Assam, Suvarna News, Asianet News, Asianet News Telugu, digit, Your Story, Aajkaal, Lokmat, Dainik Bhaskar, Business World, LBB, Tripoto, The Kashmir Monitor, RSJonline.com, Vikatan, Divya Bhaskar, Sambad, Punjab Kesri and autoX.

Republicworld.com has a dedicated team of 30–35 people. It has a mix of original and aggregated content.

Republic TV COO Jay Chauhan said that the mobile app will launch in a few weeks because the news broadcaster wants to make it technologically superior than what is available in the market.

Khanchandani said Republicworld.com will be a well-rounded digital news destination with a mix of audio, video and textual content.
