All seven shareholders back YouView for a further five years
MUMBAI: Continuing investment in YouView, the fastest growing TV service in the UK, has been agreed by all seven existing shareholders with funding guaranteed for at least five years.
The new agreement retains BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva as equal shareholders committed to promoting the future of connected free-to-air TV and enabling an upgrade path to pay services.
YouView, which pioneered a TV service that combines live and catch up television, also announced that it has passed well over 1 million connected UK homes in less than 18 months since its marketing launch.
Usage and satisfaction with YouView continues to grow with over 3 million video on demand (VOD) plays achieved each week (half a million plays a day). Over half of YouView customers are viewing 4 half hour VOD TV programmes each week.
YouView CEO Richard Halton said, “We are delighted that all seven shareholders have committed to the future of YouView with a 5 year term. We have achieved a significant milestone with well over 1 million homes regularly using the service and high levels of usage and satisfaction as key indicators of success for the future. The next phase for YouView involves ambitious developments across a range of devices and we’re looking forward to achieving our long term target of 10 million connected UK homes.”
YouView currently offers over 70 free-to-air TV and radio channels as well as 112 internet delivered TV channels and 9 fully integrated on demand players which include a choice of free and pay TV, radio and film content. A free YouView app for iOS and Android devices is available to customers offering a TV guide and the option to remote record TV progammes. Further content provider additions and app updates are planned for 2014 as well as regular software updates pushed to the set-top box.
YouView offers accessibility functionality including zoom, high contrast EPG and compatibility with Grid 2 software.
YouView is currently accredited by Good Housekeeping Institute with 5 star reviews and awards achieved from a variety of revered consumer publications including Mumsnet Best, Stuff, GQ, Recombu, What Hi Fi Sound and Vision.
