Airtel takes on Reliance Jio, adds dittoTV to strengthen app
MUMBAI: Bharti Airtel has strengthened its app by adding ZEEL-owned OTT service dittoTV to take on Reliance Jio’s streaming application Jio TV.
The arrangement with dittoTV will allow Airtel to offer over 100 live TV channels with catch-up options on its over-the-top (OTT) platform.
Airtel will offer the app to its users without any subscription charge. Otherwise, dittoTV’s subscription fee starts with a monthly price of Rs 20.
Earlier, in June, Idea had run a promotional offer under which customers in Idea 3G and 4G provider circles would be able to subscribe to dittoTV free of cost, along with select monthly data packs, until 31 July.
On the live TV front, rival Reliance Jio’s OTT service, Jio TV, offers over 368 TV channels, including Star India’s linear channels. Even Star’s VoD service Hotstar is bundled with the app. In fact, this is the first time that Star India has offered its content to another platform that offers OTT service.
Vodafone Play has also brought together videos, movies, TV shows and music. It offers over 180 live TV channels, including popular film and entertainment channels Sony Pictures Networks India, Viacom18, TV18, ZEEL, Sun TV Network, TV9 network, B4U Television, TV Today Network, Times Network, in partnership with dittoTV.
Strengthening its offerings, Bharti Airtel on Wednesday launched a new version of its MyAirtel App. In addition to its convenient self-care features, the re-launched MyAirtel App will have an ‘Airtel apps’ section that will have a collection of top apps under a single interface. dittoTV, Hike Messenger, Wynk Music, Wynk Movies and Juggernaut are some of the apps available within ‘Airtel apps’.
There are also two new apps from the Airtel stable—Airtel Cloud and Airtel Dialer. Airtel Cloud provides 2GB of free cloud storage and back-up space. What’s more, there are no data upload charges for the scheduled overnight back-ups for prepaid customers currently, and this benefit will be made available to postpaid customers soon.
Airtel Dialer offers 50 minutes of free Airtel-to-Airtel calling benefits, apart from its call management feature.
Customers who already have the MyAirtel App on their smartphones can update to receive the new features, while new users can download the new app from Google Play Store (for Android) and Apple App Store (for iOS).
Bharti Airtel global CIO, director of engineering Harmeen Mehta said, “As part of our Digital Airtel initiative, we are excited to bring you the new avatar of the MyAirtel App, which now offers a unified interface to the entire suite of our popular mobile apps and several new ones. All these apps have been curated to ensure customers are offered the best of the web, with more exciting apps and partnerships coming in the near future. We would love everybody to experience the new version of MyAirtel App and join us in making it better and better.”
