GTPL Hathway grows in size, cable TV universe is 7.43 mn
MUMBAI: GTPL Hathway has grown big in size as it has expanded across markets outside its home turf Gujarat.
The multi-system operator (MSO), in which Hathway Cable & Datacom owns 50%, seeded 6.19 million set-top boxes (STBs) until 30 September 2016.
The company’s cable TV universe comprised 7.43 million customers, which means 1.24 million homes were still to be seeded with STBs.
GTPL Hathway had an active digital subscriber base of 5.41 million. Of the active subscribers, 4.19 million were paying subscribers.
The MSO’s primary subscriber base stood at 0.32 million. In digital cable, the primary subscriber base was 0.15 million. Primary subscribers are active STBs with end customers/users that are billed directly by the company.
The company’s secondary subscriber base was 5.26 million for which the billing is done by local cable operators (LCOs).
The MSO is present in 169 towns across 10 states. Gujarat is its core market where it had a share of 67% in 2015 servicing 3.7 million of the total 5.6 million cable TV homes. Its second important market is West Bengal where it had 24% market share in Kolkata and Howrah with 0.7 million of the estimated three million cable TV homes.
The company also said that it had received requisitions for 2.02 million STBs from LCOs until 31 August.
The average revenue per user (ARPU) for primary customers was Rs 220.34 while the same for secondary customers was Rs 72.98.
As of 30 September, the company had active relationships with 13,775 LCOs. The company had added 4,004 and 1,286 LCOs on a net basis in FY16 and FY15 respectively, and another 2,507 LCOs on a net basis until 30 September 2016.
GTPL’s broadband subscriber base stood at 0.22 million. Currently, it is offering broadband primarily in Gujarat with established homes passed of 1 million. Its broadband ARPU stood at Rs 463.87.
The company owned and operated 28 channels offering localised content across a wide range of genres including religious, culture, film, music and education, as of 30 September 2016.
The MSO offered 285 standard-definition (SD) channels, 164 regionally transmitted SD channels, 32 high-definition (HD) channels and 38 regionally transmitted HD channels.
GTPL has two main digital head-ends at Ahmedabad and Kolkata and four support digital head-ends at Dibrugarh, Adilabad, Visakhapatnam and Patna. It owns an optic fibre cable network (intra-city & intercity) of 5,406 km (on a consolidated basis) and leased fibre cable network of 3,480 km on a standalone basis.
